More on the Beringer Vineyards Great Steak Challenge

There have been some fun things in the works with the Beringer Vineyards Great Steak Challenge.  First, all of you that won carving sets and gave me your address should have received your prize by now.  I also got one, and I have to say that they’re really nice!

And I got this from Jeffrey Schiller, the Associate Brand Manager for Beringer Vineyards, in an email on Thursday:

Dear Curt:

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected as one of the Regional Finalists for Region 8 in the Beringer Great Steak Challenge. As a Regional Finalist, you have won $1,000 to use towards travel expenses to attend the Regional Final at the Arts, Beats and Eats in Royal Oak, MI.  Once there, you will cook your recipe live against 9 other Finalists from your area.  The winner will then fly to Beringer Vineyards in Napa Valley for a chance to win $15,000 at the Beringer Great Steak Challenge Finale, filmed and aired by the Cooking Channel!

So that means I’m heading to the Detroit area for Labor Day weekend, to see if my wine and coffee recipe bodes well with the judges. If I win, I will be going to Napa Valley to compete against the other regional winners for a great prize!

I hope everyone is enjoying their carving sets… I’m hoping to use mine while winning the Region 8 final! I’ll be cooking a ribeye with an espresso based rub with ancho chile, turbinado sugar, salt and pepper, topped with a wine/espresso sauce. it’s simple but tasty!

In the meantime, if you didn’t get me your address after I emailed you about winning your Laguiole carving set, here’s more of what you’re missing! (get me your address!!!)

I’ll be practicing a lot this month, and it looks like I’ll be leading a steak tasting late in August in Cincinnati for the Artisan Beef Institute. Stay tuned for more!

  3. Congratulations, Curl. Advancing to the regional competition is already a great achievement but I hope you can also make it to the national. I’m sure you are already proud of yourself and I admire you so much. You’re talent is a gift that only few can have. Inspire us more and surprise them with your natural talent.

  4. Great looking knives – excited to hear how it all turns out for you!

  5. Analise,

Thanks. I don’t know if I’m proud of myself yet, as it was just a recipe I’ve submitted so far, but I hope to put in a good showing in Detroit!

    Adam,
The knives are nice looking. I’m used to my Japanese Shun knives, but these feel a bit more “old school”, but look and feel great.
