This year’s Labor Day started early for me. I had to get up at 5:15 am to get things loaded into the car to head to downtown Cincinnati. I was asked to do another segment on Fox 19 Morning News for Labor Day!
Fortunately, Fox 19 put the video from the segment on their web page:
The morning was fun, but it rained heavily the whole way down to the studio, and during the time I was there, so it was all done inside using a cast iron grill pan. The funny thing with that was the smoke from cooking the burgers almost set off the smoke alarm… They would have remembered me for a long time for that!
At home, we had some nice NY Strip steaks to fix, so I did a really simple meal with grilled steaks and mushrooms, and I put some basil compound butter on the steaks. My wife also made a great Greek style salad with cucumbers, red onion, heirloom tomatoes, feta cheese and kalamata olives with Greek dressing. It was a great meal, with a nice Shiraz to go along with it.
The steaks became their own version of “Better Than Leftovers”, being made into great steak sandwiches. For these, I used a sourdough bread and added steak slices along with sliced portabello mushrooms and some Humboldt Fog cheese (I LOVE this stuff!). The sandwiches went on my grill pan with a grill press, my version of a panini grill, and it works great!
To round out the week, we took Dreyfus Dog out to the dog park for his second visit. Earlier, it was just too muddy to take him, but Thursday is his day for puppy class, and it’s good to do something to get rid of some energy before class! We got there to see only a couple of dogs, but within half an hour, there were about 12 or so dogs there, and Dreyfus somehow became the official greeter of new dogs coming into the park. He got muddy still, and transferred that to me, but he had a great time. And puppy class went very smoothly!
Then to finish off the steak leftovers, I had a simple steak and eggs breakfast. What a great way to start the day!
All in all, Labor Day week was a good week at my house… I hope it was in yours, too!

Those sandwiches look crazy good.
Hi Curt,
What a great segment! We certainly love using chimneys to light our BBQ briquettes. Those steaks look delicious with the basil compound butter!
