Monsieur Tofu felt that his first battle with Mr. Bacon was unfair. “How could ze contest be fair? Ze restaurant served ze bacon dipped in ze batter and zen fried! I cannot compete under zese conditions!”
So last night, I fired up the XL Big Green Egg and got it going to about 600 degrees, and sliced up some fresh mozzarella, on-the-vine tomatoes and Vidalia onion. The dough wasn’t my own, since I thought it was going to be raining all weekend, but we used Trader Joe’s ($1.19 for 2-3 pizzas). It’s a decent alternative when in a pinch. After baking, some basil was added for a finishing touch.
The pizza got baked in about 7 minutes, and the results were quite tasty!
How did Monsieur Tofu fare?
For their second battle, Mr. Bacon grabbed his chest and fell over, in a reverse heart attack, from having nothing even remotely bacony near the pizza!
M. Tofu takes the win, bringing the battle total to 1-1. However, I think it’s bad form to gloat, considering that this is a barbecue household. Will Mr. Bacon bounce back? Most likely, but stay tuned to find out!

You crazy guy you… playing with little bendy bacons and tofus. Silly
I want a big green egg!! Don’t think I’ll ever get one.. but I’d sure like to have one. Pizza on the grill is so much fun. And the simple sort that you whipped up is perfect. TJ’s dough is decent enough in a pinch.
Lori,
You can blame my wife on Mr. Bacon and M. Tofu! She bought them for me.. kind of an odd anniversary present, huh?
I’m about to publish my review of the Bubba Keg, which is very BGE-like, but costs $200 less… certainly worth looking into!
Very cute!!
N,
Since when is pizza ‘cute’?
Well, your pizza can be cute if you want, but I was referring to the figurines and the story.
N,
I was just being selectively and intentionally dense. I am good at it!
My wife saw Mr. Bacon vs. M. Tofu and had to get it for me, but it does seem to work around here, as we seem to go from lots o’ meat to no meat to balance things out.
Just found you on Twitter. What a beauty your pizza. I would love a Big Green Egg.
Hélène,
Thanks, and the BGE is a great all around cooker. I wouldn’t be doing a lot of the stuff I’ve been doing outside if it weren’t for such a versatile cooker. It took some talking to convince my wife to let me get one, but I don’t think she’d give it up now. She’s like that with her iphone, too.
And I’m glad you found me! I’ll be checking out your blog soon, too.
