There’s a new player in the game of egg-like cookers, but, instead of an egg, it’s a keg. In fact, it’s from the makers of those huge metal mugs you’ve probably seen around, Bubba Keg. The cooker is very ‘keg’ looking and is called the Bubba Keg Convection Grill.

All I have is some info from the company, but I’ll be finding out more. At first look, though, this looks like a pretty interesting cooker. The unit is made out of double walled steel with oven-grade fiberglass insulation. I thought it would weigh a lot less than a Big Green Egg, but it’s only about 30 lbs lighter.
Bubba Keg has taken something from the Big Green Egg… something I would bet Big Green Egg is glad they took, too. They have a mesh screen over the air intake (bottom vent) to prevent sparking. This is a lesson I hope no one has to relearn!

A couple unique features to the Bubba Keg cooker that I think are interesting are the cast iron adjustable grate, and the top grate extension that pivots out of the way. The main grate looks like very heavy duty cast iron, and the top grate can be easily moved out of the way to get to the main grate.

The unit also comes on a wheeled base that works like a dolly to move it around easily. This is an improvement over the nest for BGEs, I think. And more, the cooker comes off the base and slides into a hitch receiver to be transported easily! Pretty cool! That also means that the cooker is designed to lock down for travel. It even has a built in bottle opener!
I should be finding out more about the Bubba Keg Convection Grill soon… I’ll keep you posted!

I just showed off your website to my hubby and told him what a wonderful guy you are. I told him how you and your wife love cooking outdoors and having people over (and I told him you are a Christian which is icing on cake for us)…my hubby said “what a coincidence, we love to go over to people’s houses to eat!” LOL
Carole,
It was nice meeting you today. We’ll have to figure out a time for you all to come out!
do you have these for sale or is this a one of a kind
John,
I don’t sell anything, really. Bubba Keg got in touch with me to pass on information. I also have a demo unit on the way to test out next week.
I have been looking for a kamado style grill to buy in the near future and this one caught my eye. I even went and looked at it 1st hand at my local home depot. I want to love it but I have some questions that seem to be hard to answer that are scaring me away from this thing.
1. brand new to market and I have no idea how it will perform compared to other brands that have been market tested for years, aka green egg, grill dome, primo.
2. the warranty is 3 yrs on most parts and 5 on one or two, far lower warranty than the competition (20yrs to lifetime)
3. the warany info said rust/burn through multiple times, makes me wonder if the metal is prone to this as opposed to ceramic
4. how much are the replacement parts if you need them and where do you get them, the home depot guy said they could order if needed but had no clue really on price.
If you find an answer to any of these questions please let me know.
Regards,
Lando
Lando,
I don’t know much more, as mine is being delivered within the next hour.
Actually, as I was typing, there was a knock on the door.. I have the grill! I’ll let you know more as I find it out!
What a great looking grill! We are interested to hear how your demo unit is going after you have put it to the test
Heat Beads,
it’s put together now, and I’ll be seasoning it and using it tomorrow. It went together really easily, and looks to be pretty well designed.
I read somewhere online that it weighs 235lbs which beats out my BGE.
Sid,
I’m not sure where you read that, but it doesn’t weight 235 lbs. It’s 110, which is about 30 lbs lighter than a large BGE. And it’s more portable. There are some nice things about the Bubba Keg that are worth looking at, especially if you want to move the grill around much at all.
I wasn’t dissing it. It look interesting and if the price is right, I may convince my gas grilling brother-in-law to get one for smoking (but I can’t change him from using his too many dial stainless one piece outdoor kitchen for burgers).
Here’s the blog entry where I found it: http://whitetrashbbq.blogspot.com/2009/03/preview-bubba-keg.html
sid.
Sid,
I didn’t think you were. WTB is partially right; when Fedex called to deliver mine, they said the shipping weight was about 250 lbs, but the actually grill is only 110. I don’t know what all the extra weight was supposed to be, other than the palette.
To mount the actual grill onto the base or onto a hitch, a second pair of hands would be a huge help, but it’s not too heavy for one man to do. If you have a bad back, though, don’t try this at home!
For a gas griller, this would make a great addition, i think. Good luck with your BIL… Just remember, some people just don’t get it.
