Egg Nog – It’s What’s For Tree Trimming

I’m going to go on record to state that I find store-bought egg nog to be of the devil. It’s pure evil in a carton, the Beelzebub of beverages. The reason I know this to be true is that I know what real egg nog tastes like, and it is NOT that demon-concocted slime that pours out of festively decorated boxes of false promises each holiday season!

The false promises are all about people being fooled, tempted, entrapped into thinking the contents won’t lead to hellish abuse of one’s tastebuds.

Not only do I know the good side of egg nog, but I know how easy it is to make good egg nog. I only have it once a year, during tree trimming activities, but I enjoy it each year while decorating the tree in Rudolph ornaments.


Honestly, I’ve had that glop that the stores sell, with over-pasteurized whitish liquid that’s over-spiced with nutmeg. The stuff has to be cooked in black cauldrons during animal sacrifices in order to make the eggs safe… but at what cost? Your soul.


Here’s my ever-so-simple way to make egg nog that even angels would be happy to drink:


Egg Nog Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 1 cup of vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup half and half (milk can be used instead)
  • 2 eggs, as fresh as you can get them
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla
  • A pinch of fresh nutmeg
  • A pinch and a half of ground cinnamon
  • A shot of white rum or bourbon
  • Rudolph and Clarise mugs are optional, but just barely

In a blender, add in the above, blend until smooth. Pour into Rudolph and Clarise mugs (if you’re Christmas-hip enough to have them), sprinkle with a touch of fresh nutmeg and/or cinnamon, and enjoy.






I’m big on the using quality ingredients, but there are times when lesser quality can be used without noticing the difference. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE TIMES. For all of the above, use the best you can get. Since this is a raw beverage without a lot of ingredients, the quality will really show through, either good or bad.

This egg nog is so easy, and, by avoiding that demonic aberration at the grocery, it’s one more way to deny the Devil any joy at Christmas.

  2. You can use milk for the ice cream, too, but it’s not as thick… I like the ice cream. :)

  4. Patricia, I thought everyone had tried egg nog by now… whether good stuff or satanic grocery egg nog. Just be especially careful of the eggs since they’re raw.

    You’ve got it all wrong… It’s Christmas-cool, not adorable. Please, you’re hurting my male ego here!

    We have, literally, at least 5 large bins full of Rudolph stuff. If someone were to rob us, they could make a mint on ebay with this stuff!

  7. I tried fresh egg nog once and only once, and it was awful. And I convinced myself that I got salmonella poisoning and had psychosomatic symptoms.

    But your eggnog sounds more like a spiked milkshake:-) That’s definitely worth another try.

  8. Its hard for me to tell with one is with the spiffy new camera! The first one? It has a very deep DOF … hard to tell … coulda cheated and tried to find your EXIF data at flickr but wont until I hit send on this comment.

    I could go for some egg nog for breakfast (and you thought chipotle wraps were bad breakfasts choices)

  9. Darlene, you could almost make these without egg… Or maybe use some egg beaters. I know once I have something like that happen, though, I may never want whatever made me ill again!

    Nika, the photos of the decorations are the ones from the new camera… The food shots were the night before I got the new one.

    And chipotle wraps for breakfast sound just fine to me.

    Never thought to try ice cream with my nog. I’ll have to do that next time.

    The recipe that I used (a la Alton Brown) separates the eggs and frothing the whites and folding them into the milk, cream and yolk mixture. I wonder if the ice cream method gives the same effect.

  11. Scott, I’ve had AB’s, and it’s great, too. It’s just harder to make, so I don’t make it when I do the tree trimming. :)
