Cheesecake from heaven!

Back in April, my wife and I went on a quick trip to NYC, and I happened to have photographed about every piece of food that I ate!

One place we found we loved on a previous trip was Carnegie Deli in Times Square.  Not only do they have great pastrami sandwiches, but they also have incredible cheesecake.  In fact, I have half of one in my freezer right now, a gift from my sister, Heather.

But recently, Bobby Flay did a Throwdown with Junior’s in Brooklyn on cheesecake… Bobby won that one, but Junior’s put up a new cheesecake called Devil’s Food Cheesecake.  It’s basically a devil’s food cake with a layer of cheesecake in the middle of the whole thing.

We wanted to try Junior’s but we weren’t sure where it was.  As it happened, we were in Grand Central Station on Friday afternoon of our trip, and, lo and behold, there’s a Junior’s there!  We had to stop and try some cheesecake!

Now they have traditional cheesecake, but they also do several ‘fancy’ cheesecakes.  I got the devil’s food, and my wife got a slice of carrot cake cheesecake.

So how was it?  It was really great.  I have to agree, however, with the judges on the Throwdown show… The devil’s food was too much devil’s food and not enough cheesecake.  I would have preferred a different ratio there, but it was still great.  The carrot cake was better, I thought, as carrot cake inherently includes cream cheese, and the cheesecake stood out more.

What I need to do is go back to NYC and try a slice of Carnegie Deli’s plain against a slice of Junior’s plain, then decide which one reigns as my favorite NYC cheesecake.  If you have any others you think are even better, let me know!  I may just plan a trip for the sole purpose of a cheesecake battle!
